If you happen to visit Hiroshima, you have to try their most famous dish, Hiroshimayaki. The city is well-known for making the most delicious Okonomiyaki in Japan. Forget what you tried in Tokyo, Hiroshima has a whole new experience in store for you!

What Is Okonomiyaki
Okonomiyaki is a Japanese-style pizza where you can build your own to make the dish fit your taste. The name itself is translated from Japanese as “how you like it grilled”. The standard set offered to you in Hiroshima’s restaurants is a thin pancake topped with finely shredded and fried cabbage, slices of pork, fried noodles and eggs topped with Katsuobushi (dried, fermented and smoked skipjack tuna flakes). But really, you can pick any ingredients to go inside – the menus have a variety of options for you to experiment to create your very own one-of-a-kind dish.

How To Eat
On the tables you will find two bottles with sauces that are traditionally mixed with Okonomiyaki. One is mayo and the other one is a special Okonomiyaki sauce. Pour them both on your food, mix and enjoy.

Don’t forget to come hungry because the portions are quite large.

What Is Special
You might wonder, what is so special about Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima versus in any other city. Essentially, Hiroshima’s chefs have perfected the art of the Japanese pancake. The cabbage turns out very soft and the bottom pancake is super thin. This dish is so incredible that it leaves you craving for more!
